Hi, I’m Ana.
I'm a photographer from Brazil based in Valencia, Spain, working in black and white documentary photography.
My path in photography began with cats and other animals. It was a natural choice because I've always felt a deep connection with them, and truth be told, I was something of a skittish creature myself. Photographing them let me develop my eye without the pressure of social interaction. In a way, they taught me to look before they taught me anything else.
I hold a BA and a Master's degree in Philosophy from the University of Birmingham, where I specialised in empathy and happiness. Philosophy has shaped how I see the world and what I ask of my work.
I've spent over two decades questioning the way humans relate to other animals: the hierarchies we impose, the lives we render invisible. My photography is one answer to that question: a practice of attention.
I work in black and white because it is the language of contrast and the lives I photograph are contrast made visible: beauty and suffering, presence and invisibility, fragility and resilience.
