Street Cats of Valencia
This series is devoted to the cats who live on the streets of Valencia - beings who are constantly visible, yet so often overlooked, living on the margins of urban life. Through black-and-white photography, I aim to slow the gaze and create space for each cat to be seen as an individual. The images seek to restore a sense of presence and dignity to lives that are frequently absorbed into the anonymous rhythm of the city.
Many of these cats have been abandoned and must learn to survive in an environment never meant for them. They are exposed to disease, accidents, violence, and everyday indifference, and most do not live long lives. Others endure thanks to the sustained care of volunteers who feed, sterilise, and protect them, often relying on little more than personal commitment and small donations. These quiet, daily acts of care make survival possible.
The photographs do not romanticise this reality, nor do they reduce it to suffering alone. Instead, they dwell in the delicate space between fragility and resilience. The cats are shown as they are, within the places they inhabit, in moments of rest, alertness, or simple presence.
Taken as a whole, the project invites a more attentive and compassionate way of seeing. It encourages reflection on abandonment, urban coexistence, and our responsibility toward the nonhuman animals with whom we share our cities.
