Street Cats of Valencia

This series focuses on the cats who live on the streets of Valencia - beings who are highly visible yet largely overlooked, existing on the margins of urban life. Through black-and-white photography, I aim to slow down the gaze and draw attention to each cat as an individual, restoring a sense of presence and dignity to lives that are often rendered anonymous.

Many of these cats have been abandoned and must navigate an environment that was never meant for them. They are exposed to disease, accidents, violence, and everyday indifference. Some do not live long lives. Others survive thanks to the sustained efforts of volunteers who feed, sterilise, and protect them, often relying solely on personal resources and public donations.

The images do not seek to romanticise this reality, nor do they reduce it to suffering alone. Instead, they inhabit a fragile balance between vulnerability and resilience, portraying the cats as they are, within the spaces they occupy, in moments of simple existence. The work invites a more attentive and compassionate way of seeing those who are so often absorbed into the background of the city.

As a whole, the project encourages reflection on abandonment, urban coexistence, and our responsibility toward the nonhuman animals with whom we share our cities.
